Nielson「ニールソン」

In the 1930s, the first civilian airport in the Philippines was built by Laurie Reuben Nielson,
a New Zealand-born Englishman who lived in Manila.
After the outbreak of World War II,
Nielson Airport was used as a headquarters for the U.S. Air Force. The Japanese bombed the airport and airfield in December 1941 and used this control tower as their air command post-invasion.
Nielson was taken away by the Japanese and interned in Hong Kong, never to be seen again.
The tower is now used as a restaurant.
1930年代、マニラに住んだニュージーランド生まれのイギリス人、Laurie Reuben Nielson（ローリー・ルーベン・ニールソン）によって、フィリピン初の民間飛行場が建設される。第二次世界大戦の勃発以後、ニールソン空港はアメリカ空軍の司令部として使われていたが、日本軍は1941年12月にこの空港と飛行場を爆撃し、侵攻後は管制塔を航空司令部として使用した。ニールソンは日本軍に連行され香港に抑留された後、二度と姿を現すことはなく消息を絶つ。現在、この管制塔はレストランとして利用されている。
